Article: INDEPENDENCE BEGINS AT HOME

INDEPENDENCE BEGINS AT HOME

INDEPENDENCE BEGINS AT HOME

We often imagine independence as something big, about struggle, courage, and freedom fought for by those who came before us.

However, as we grow older, we may begin to understand that independence also comes in simpler and more tangible forms, which actually begin from the place closest to us: our home.

As children, freedom feels that simple. We are free to play, to imagine, to create our own worlds, without thinking too much about whether what we do is good enough or meets other people's expectations. We simply do it because we love it. Our spirits are whole, and that strength comes from within, not from anyone's approval.

Then we grow up. Our choices become greater, but so do our expectations. There are standards to meet, voices to listen to, and sometimes validation that we unknowingly make a measure of ourselves. Slowly, we trade that inner strength for external motivation. Yet perhaps, this is where another meaning of freedom begins to take shape, when we learn to determine our own direction, rather than simply following the current.

Growing up does not mean being free to do anything. Growing up means being free to choose consciously, complete with all the consequences. Choosing what truly matters. Choosing what we want to fight for. Choosing to keep creating even when it is not yet perfect. And choosing to make peace with every imperfection, because that is where we get to know ourselves more deeply.

It is this awareness that we then carry when our turn comes to accompany the next generation as they grow. We begin to understand that children are not here to fulfill our expectations, or to become an extension of our unfinished dreams. They are here with their own uniqueness, their own path, and their own time to bloom.

Our task is not to shape them, but to accompany them. Not to guide them to become like us, but to provide the space that we may have once had, or perhaps never had the chance to have. A space where they are accepted as they are. A space where mistakes and failures are not the end, but part of the journey itself.

Because a spirit that is fully accepted will grow peacefully. A spirit that is accompanied without the burden of expectations will find its strength from within. And a free spirit will shine with its own light.

Perhaps, all of this begins with a small space in our home. A space to dream without limits, a space to choose, a space to create, and a space to be ourselves.
In the end, independence is not only about what was fought for, but also about what we pass on afterward.

May their spirits be free. Happy Independence Day, Indonesia. 🇮🇩
